It started with a swap: American oak whiskey barrels from Kentucky bourbon makers went to the historic Bow Street Distillery in Dublin, Ireland where they were filled with Jameson Irish Whiskey. Soon after came an unexpected second step - swapping those whiskey barrels for stout beer casks from St. James' Gate Brewery where brewing had been going on in Dublin longer than distilling. The result was Jameson Caskmates Stout Edition, Triple Distilled Blended Irish Whiskey aged for three years, which was then blended using the same technique and hand-bottled in original Jameson bottles.
The first time Jameson Irish Whiskey and Guinness beer got together there was magic. The result was Caskmates - the first and only whiskey aged in barrels used to mature stout beer. Bringing you back to that evening, we blend double and triple distilled whiskey, aged in stout beer casks, then triple refined using a special process to get it just right.
TASTING NOTES
NOSE
An initial aroma of freshly cut hay is complemented by a crisp orchard fruit character – green apples and pears, with a twist of lime zest. Mild pot still spices appear, deepening from green tea to hazelnut and milk chocolate.
TASTE
The initial sweet mouth coating typical of the Irish pot still inclusion is quickly complemented by the subtle touch of hops and cocoa beans from the beer cask finish.
FINISH
Long and sweet with milk chocolate and butterscotch.
